Porcelain and composite resin are the two main materials for aesthetic dental restorations. Porcelain (ceramics) offers superior aesthetics with natural translucency, excellent color stability, high stain resistance, and longevity (15-25 years for veneers). However, it requires laboratory fabrication, multiple appointments, and more tooth preparation. Composite resin is directly applied in a single appointment, requires less tooth removal, costs less, and is easily repairable. However, it stains over time, wears faster, and typically lasts 5-7 years before needing replacement or repair. The choice depends on budget, aesthetic expectations, time availability, and the specific clinical situation. Many cosmetic dentists use composite for trial smile transformations and porcelain for definitive restorations.
